Comics as contemporary
literature
Reading the comics for this week I
started to notice that the comics dealt with more real-life situations rather than
fantastical subject matter and superheroes. The comics dealt with scenarios
such as society and our perception of people and also a lot of metaphorical
use. In comics, such as One Bad Rat and
Optic Nerve the stories are about the
issues that real-world people face and have to face real life villains rather than
the fantastical super villains from superhero comics. I think that is why
comics are becoming more part of contemporary literature because it isn’t
fantastical but is realistic which in contemporary literature non-fiction
becomes more prominent in society. People have associated comics with more
fantastic things so the change to realistic has helped transition comics into
contemporary literature. I think another thing that helps move comics to be
considered in contemporary literature is the illustration style that is being
used. Some are very simple sticking to the comic illustration style that is
normal to the comic strips but other comics use a more illustrative style using
colors and more realistic drawings of people and objects.
