Barefoot Gen Reading vs Movie

I initially didn’t read Barefoot Gen Vol. 1 but after we watched the animated movie version of the book I thought I should read it to see how it would compare to the novel version because that is something I always do when movies are created based on books. Reading the novel version and seeing the characters that were used and also not used in the movie and also seeing the style and how they have changed it from the graphic novel version compared to the animation movie. Watching the movie, it had the classic Japanese animation characteristics that I recognize like from watching other Japanese animations such as Pokémon and Studio Ghibli. I think it is interesting that they chose to show it in this style of the movie because it is a very serious subject matter using an art form that isn’t always associated with that type of style. Something I thought was interesting is the exclusion of the oldest brother Akira in the movie but there wasn’t even any mention of him in the movie but we do get introduced to him in the graphic novel. The introduction is very short but we learn about how the family seems to be more involved in the war that is going on in comparison to the movie. Something else that changes from the graphic narrative compared to the movie is the novel includes more about the war and presents it more directly whereas the movie hints at the war but doesn’t have as direct of a presentation to the audience compared to the novel. The movie hints at the war but the only time I truly felt that the war was directly referenced to with the air raid drills, the bomb drop and the aftermath but the novel focuses more on the military aspect of the people and their roles.
